The MonaLisa Touch is an FDA-approved laser treatment designed to treat women suffering from problems with their vagina like painful intercourse, dryness or irritation. Many of these women owe such symptoms to menopause, breast cancer treatments or a hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus).
How does the MonaLisa Touch work?
The MonaLisa Touch is a medical laser that emits controlled carbon dioxide energy and sends it to the vagina. The energy then stimulates the vaginal cells into making collagen. The doctor uses a probe that she inserts into the patient’s vaginal canal. The probe produces a two-part pulse that targets epithelial (surface) and lamina propria (deep) cells. It temporarily rejuvenates the vagina.
The MonaLisa Touch is an outpatient procedure performed in our office. The patient will not need anesthesia. While the MonaLisa Touch does not cause pain, some patients find the first session uncomfortable because it takes time to get used to having the probe inserted in their vagina. Many patients say the actual treatment feels like a mild vibration.
The procedure itself is similar to that of a vaginal exam or PAP smear. The patient disrobes and puts on a gown. She will then lie on an examination table with her feet in stirrups. The doctor will put a sterile insertion ring in the patient’s vaginal opening. The insertion ring will keep the laser handpiece from rubbing against the labia.
The typical patient will have three treatments each six weeks apart. The procedure takes about five minutes. Most patients feel better right after the first treatment, and the effects last about a year. The patient should not have sex or insert anything in her vagina for about two or three days after the procedure.
Who is a good candidate for the MonaLisa Touch?
The MonaLisa Touch was designed for women who have gone through menopause. It can also help women who have had a hysterectomy or been treated for breast cancer and are therefore experiencing symptoms like those seen in menopause.
During breast cancer treatment, women can be forced into surgical or chemical menopause sooner than other women. The treatment for this used to involve incorporating estrogen. This can be dangerous and uncomfortable for some women due to the added hormones. MonaLisa Touch treatments now offer a safe alternative with long-lasting results.
