Implanon is a soft, flexible insert, smaller than a matchstick, that releases a small controlled amount of low-dose hormone to prevent pregnancy. It is placed in the upper inner arm just below the skin and will prevent pregnancy for 3 years. The Implanon insert will need to be removed after three years, and may be replaced with another if so desired. It is found to be a very effective form of birth control and has been shown to significantly reduce a woman’s menstrual flow to a light period.
